With the completion of two months from the earthquake that struck the region of Port-au-Prince in Haiti, the chairman, René Préval said that the number of victims is estimated at 300,000.
The number of homeless amounts to 1.2 million people. Of these, about 300,000 have been supplied tents and living in refugee camps and parks. An assessment of local and foreign engineers, only 40% of the buildings can be used, while 60% of 900 audited buildings should be demolished.
At the same time, the people of Haiti have to expect the period of heavy rains, beginning in May. The rains that have occurred so far, already worsened the situation in places where refugees reside. Typically, at least 10 are killed by floods caused by heavy rainfall in the southwest of Haiti.
Already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere is estimated to require 14 billion dollars for reconstruction. In an effort to alleviate the burden of the country, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution calling to alleviate the debts of Haiti.
At the same time, the G7, the group of seven major industrialized nations - Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, USA - announced in early February that the debt of Haiti, which reached about 1.88 billion U.S. dollars at the end September 2008 will be barred.
The nations of Europe will strengthen Haiti to 609 million euros (EU budget and state budget), of which 309 million euro for humanitarian aid and 300 million for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
